These fresh homemade devil dogs taste way better than the store bought kind.
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, divded
1 large egg
2 cups plus 2 1/2 tablespoons all purpose flour, divided
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
1 1/2 cups milk, divided
1/2 cup shortening
Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Cake
In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and 1 cup of the sugar. Add in the egg.
Grab a sifter and sift the following ingredients together over the butter mixture:
2 cups of flour, cocoa, baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt and baking powder. Stir in the vanilla and 1 cup of milk.
Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 7 - 8 minutes. Cool completely. Slice in half lengthwise and fill with cream filling between layers.
Filling
In a small saucepan, combine 2 1/2 teaspoons flour and 1/2 cup milk; cook on medium-high heat until mixture looks like a thick paste. Cool completely.
In a medium bowl, cream together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Add in the cooled flour paste and beat until
fluffy.
Note: For more volume, double the filling recipe.
